Jigjiga, August 13, 2024 — A transformative journey towards improved healthcare and sustainable livelihoods has begun in the Somali region with the launch of the Healthcare and Livelihood Improvement Advocacy Project (HaLIAPS). This initiative, led by the Gudina Tumsa Foundation (GTF) and generously funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to address critical challenges in healthcare, and nutrition, agriculture, women economic empowerment, and financial inclusion across the region.
The grand launch event, held at Hotel Lotus in Jigjiga, brought together esteemed leaders, including Mr. Ahmed Ismael, Senior Humanitarian Advisor to the President of the Somali Regional State, and Mr. Iyobed Yonas, Program Director of GTF, along with key representatives from various sectors and honored guests.
In his keynote address, Mr. Ahmed Ismael highlighted the transformative potential of HaLIAPS. “This project transcends mere advocacy; it is a comprehensive approach to transforming healthcare and nutrition, advancing agricultural development, empowering women economically, and driving financial inclusion at a policy level,” he stated. He also expressed sincere appreciation to GTF for its enduring commitment to the region, noting the Foundation’s previous efforts, including the construction of two schools.
The HaLIAPS initiative aims to create an environment where the regional government can develop data-driven policies and strategies to address local challenges. The project’s launch in the Somali region builds upon the successes and lessons learned from the ongoing implementation of the project in Oromia, promising an even greater impact.
Mr. Iyobed Yonas expressed deep appreciation to the regional government and all stakeholders for their steadfast support in bringing this vital project to the Somali region. He highlighted the project’s strategic focus on driving inclusive agricultural transformation, expanding access to critical health and nutrition services, advocating for increased sector financing, creating an enabling environment for women’s economic advancement, and enhancing financial inclusion through digital finance and mobile money solutions.
According to Mr. Teshome Bula, HaLIAPOS Project Manager with GTF, the project launching workshop provided a dynamic platform for stakeholders to engage with the project’s vision and strategies, offering valuable insights that will shape its successful implementation. A dedicated orientation workshop for relevant sectors is set for tomorrow, allowing for deeper discussions on the project.
During the workshop, a lively plenary session took place with numerous questions addressed and participants provided constructive feedback. Mr. Yonas emphasized, “Our ultimate goal is to uplift the people of the Somali region.” He further elaborated on GTF’s commitment to rigorous research, policy analysis, and the pursuit of holistic, transformative change.
As HaLIAPS moves forward, the unwavering commitment of all involved parties is crucial. Their collaboration is expected to bring about profound improvements in the lives of the people in the Somali region. This effort will foster hope and empowerment throughout the community.
